A bedside interview with the hospitalised all-rounder injured today at Cheam

Its great to see new players coming into the club this year and I am looking forward to seeing where things go in 2021
- Jack Southwell

This interview took place at St Helier hospital whilst Jack waited for the results of a CT scan. He had been struck a blow by a Cheam batsman when bowling when a straight drive hit him in the face.

Jack was in good spirits but as you see above the seam marks were still fresh...

..........................

Name: Jack Southwell

Nicknames: Many people call me PT after they heard me telling a girl I was a personal trainer. Jon Kuhrt calls me Beefy after some Ian Botham-like performances in the 4th XI a few seasons ago...

How would you describe yourself as a player? A fielder, who bowls and bats a bit.

How long have you played at Addiscombe? This is my 9th season. I got interested in cricket and looked for a local club and came along. Robbie Narraine was 3s captain and welcomed me, despite my dodgy performances at nets. It has been great being involved and I skippered the 4s for 2 years and managed the Academy XI for 2 years too.

Best cricket memory: In 2015, I was captaining the 4s playing against Sanderstead at Addington. We got bowled out for 55 and they got to scores level with 7 wickets down. I was bowling and I took a hatrick. It meant the match ended as a tie. It was also my first 5 wicket haul for the club. It was an amazing end to a match and the celebrations were incredible!

Most embarrassing moment? Again at Addington I pulled a 6 into a neighbouring house and dented a flash Audi. We had to speak to the owners but it wasn’t that embarrassing though as Jon Kuhrt (who was captain then) had to do it as I was still batting.

I was also part of an team once who all got bowled out for just 18 runs...can you believe it? I could not be blamed though as I had got injured and was in hospital at the time...

If you could be any player who would it be? It maybe a bit controversial but I would want to be Kevin Pietersen. It was watching him bat at the t20 World Cup that England won that got me into cricket.

My favourite Addiscombe player is Vivek Patel. ‘King Viv’ never looks like he has any energy but always puts in a big effort and its always great to be in the same team as him.

Favourite format to watch: I like a Test but probably ODI Is my favourite format to watch.

Why do you like ACC? It’s welcoming and a good family club. Its great to see new players coming in this year and the club is in a good place. I am looking forward to seeing where things go in 2021!

Thanks Jack! Medical update: the CT scan revealed a fractured cheekbone but the doctor did not feel it was too much to worry about. One nurse also helpfully suggested that in future Jack wears a helmet to bowl in. Also thanks to Gavin Mander (pictured) who left his umpiring duties to take Jack to hospital.

Take care Jack, rest up mate and come back stronger!
