The ‘singing groundsman’ shares his cricket memories and a new song

'The best thing about playing for ACC was playing the game with great team mates and spending time in the bar afterwards. Even if you got nought!'
- Martin Butcher

Martin Butcher was a key batsman and captain in ACC’s 1st XI for many years. He also played for the MCC and Surrey 2nd XI. He also a musician – click on the image above of a young Butch in his MCC gear - to hear him singing his new song ‘Lockdown’.

Name: Martin Butcher

Nickname:
Butch

How would you describe yourself as a player?
An attacking right hander who often had lapses in concentration. But in a match situation when blocking was required then I’m your man! I also had high praise from established players for my captaincy.

Best cricket memory?
Too many to name. But my top 3 would be 1) my 5 years with the MCC Young Professionals, 2) the three seasons I played in South Africa and 3) opening the batting for Addiscombe with Brian Messom.

Most embarrassing cricketing moment?
Turning up to a league game for Addiscombe an hour late due to a Friday night party. I used the old chestnut of ‘my car broke down’ but completely forgetting that I was running 2 cars at the time. Oops. Bit late to apologise now.

Favourite player/cricketing hero:
Barry Richards, the South African and Hampshire opening batsman was my favourite player. My cricketing hero was Dennis Lillee, the Aussie fast bowler (I bet that surprised a few people).

Favourite format to watch? Test cricket, the only form.

Best thing about Addiscombe CC?

Playing the game with great team mates and spending time in the bar afterwards. Even if you got nought!
