Former ACC umpire, now officiating in first class matches in India, fondly remembers his days at Sandilands

'To me, Addiscombe CC is an institution by itself. I loved the cricketing atmosphere and coming up to the club was like coming back to a home away from home'
- Vikas Lund, BCCI Umpire

Addiscombe CC was very lucky to have Vikas Lund (pictured on right) umpire for us before he went onto the Surrey Championship panel. He has now gone on to be a professional umpire with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

I am very proud to call him a friend and will look forward to seeing him umpiring on the biggest stage very soon! Barry Lineker

Name: Vikas Lund

Nickname:
Vicky

How would you describe yourself as a player?
As a player I was effervescent and nonchalantly bellicose. But my moments at the crease were only fleeting, so hence the shift to wearing a white coat!

Best cricket memory?

My first ever viewing of a Test match was the Ashes in 2009 at Lord’s. Freddie Flintoff’s exploits and the electrically charged atmosphere at the ground will always be etched in my memory!

My personal highlight was when I got inducted into the BCCI as a First Class Panel Umpire.

Most embarrassing cricketing moment?
It was very embarrassing once when I had to request that we stop a match so that I could attend to an uncontrollable urge for ‘nature’s call’. It was an extremely cold day!

I have been hit by the ball a few times while umpiring which always makes me feel a bit embarrassed. It has never been too nasty though but has given me a few ‘grounded moments’.

Favourite player/cricket hero?
Wasim Akram, Courtney Walsh...or Barry ‘Baz’ Lineker! I loved watching Akram and Walsh playing but Baz is very handy, evergreen cricketer with indefatigable dexterity!

Favourite format to watch?
Got to be the 5-day Test! It is a true test of skill and endurance, mental and physical.

Although I am also looking forward to see what the ECB’s new 100 ball competition has on offer whenever that happens.

Best thing about Addiscombe CC?
To me Addiscombe CC is an institution by itself!

I shared a great bond with the folks during my days in England there and it made my stay in the country worthwhile. The camaraderie, the lovely spirit during and after the games. I can still picture and miss the ‘ever-full’ post-match beer glass. I just loved the cricketing atmosphere and remember fondly the Annual President’s Day. Coming up to the club was like coming back to a home away from home.

I am very pleased to still be in touch with the Club. Special shout out to Grant Braganza, Peter ‘Majestic’ Cowlin, Antony Starnes and David Roche. And Baz, I will never forget when you took me to the bar at the House of Lords!
