Brothers follow Dad into ACC’s top team for big local clash v Old Whits

All three of the Armstrong brothers have been selected in tomorrow’s 1st XI big local derby v Old Whitgiftians. Pictured above (L-R): Ollie, Cameron, Charlie and Dad Neil.

They follow their Dad who also played for ACC in the 1970s. To mark the occasion, we thought we would throw some questions to the family, starting off with Dad...

When did you get involved at ACC?
Joe Peirce (ACC’s President and owner of Sandliands) phoned me in summer of 1974 and ask me to come to Addiscombe and play for him and I stayed until 1979.

Are your boys similar players to you?
I was a fast bowler that could bat, so Charlie and Ollie are more similar players as Cameron is more of a bat who bowls a bit. I was good at propping up the bar too!

Any advice for your boys?
Get a good night’s sleep, Saturday will be a tough test. And I am very proud that they have managed to get picked for the 1s at same time. It can’t happen much.

And some questions for the boys:

Which players did you pretend to be when playing in the garden?

Cameron: Chanderpaul, when he burst onto the scene for the West Indies his stance was something I’d never seen before and I used to copy that when messing around

Ollie: Freddie Flintoff as he was one of my favourite players back in the day and I tried to recreate his Ashes 2005 spell against Ricky Ponting

Charlie: Paul Collingwood, in the sea or the pool Dad used to throw ‘divers’ aiming to recreate his catch at point vs Australia

What has been the best and worst things about having brothers who also play cricket?

Ollie: Me and Charlie look very similar so sometimes scorers get confused and my wickets go to his name

Charlie: The worst thing is fines. Who’s idea was that? The best thing is always having at least 2 people to net with

Cameron: Always taking a turn at getting called 'the worst Armstrong' by someone at the club haha

What have been your most memorable moments in cricket?

Charlie: Taking 4 wickets in the first over of the game when 13 in the Surrey schools cup. More recently, defending 113 last week against Sanderstead - a match we had no right to win but pulled it out the bag as a team. What a game!

Cameron: Taking a diving catch to win the game as a colt against Old Whits. The rivalry was high that day!

Ollie: Best for me was first 6 wicket haul in my first 2s game against Egham (6/29)

Most embarrassing moments?

Cameron: In a colts match, I walked out my crease at Banstead thinking the ball was dead. It was a long walk back to the club house...

Ollie: When I was younger I used to get run-out a lot. One season it was the most frequent way I got out. I was running joke at the club

Charlie: In a club game in Yorkshire, I parked my car at cow corner. Later when batting I hit a shot which went right through my own windscreen…

Thanks chaps! All the best in the match tomorrow and bring home the win for the Adders!
