Batting woes continue but A's put in a brave performance

With the team ready and willing the three cars departed Sandilands at around 11am. The next time they were all together the game had already started and it was 1.25pm. Not the ideal preparation but the car park of the south (the M25) had it's own ideas. As the whole side wasn't there and with a good looking track and baking weather Pete Cowlin won the toss and elected to bat. Not what he actually wanted to do, but not something he felt he had a choice in doing with only 9 men!
The A's innings is probably quite easy to describe. It didn't last long, the wickets generally fell to the worst balls delivered and only Taylor Hughes emerged from the game with any credit with 20*. The A's were bowled out for 95 within 30 overs and we knew we were up against it.
The bright spot of the day was undoubtedly the teas which were fantastic. A very special thank you to the only tea lady in the league who will push our own Loraine and Rosie for the best tea. Needless to say a downbeat, but very full, Addiscombe took to the field.
With the new regulation of having to take the new ball in force the A's still turned to the stalwart Barry Lineker and the newcomer Sudesh Karunanayake, on a holiday from the 1st XI. The two started brilliantly and at the first drinks break at 18 overs the Egham scorecard only read 22-2. With another session of precision bowling and good catching meant that at 36 overs Egham were still only on 48-4. After the drinks break the A's sprung into life and took 3 more wickets with Barry finishing on 24-8-42-4 and Sudesh on 21-6-42-3. With only 15 runs remaining there was one last throw of the dice with the skipper turning to the seamers. James Ramsey bowled three very tight overs but Zahid Ghani delivered only 4 balls, with 3 going for four to end the game.
The spirit shown in the field was excellent, and the A's can only say that with only another 30-40 runs the result could have been different. The batsmen really need to stand up and be counted and put a price on their wicket if the A's are to climb back up the league. They currently sit 9th in the 10 team league. Next week is at home to Sanderstead.
