The 3s narrowly fail to case down a big score, losing by 12 runs

On the back of a confident win vs Mitcham last week, the 3s went into the match away at Chipstead, Coulsden and Old Walcountians in high spirits. Despite arriving in a heavy downpour, the pitch drained quickly to enable a 1pm start as scheduled.

Toby won the toss and put the opposition in to bat, and initially the bowlers rewarded this decision with some extremely tight bowling. Sayeed kept the run rate down with 0-8 from his 9 overs, whilst Ollie Armstrong's initial spell went for 1-6 (from 5 overs). Ollie stuggled with a damp crease, but unfortunately his ploy of falling over and squealing mid-delivery didn't lead to a wicket. Ultimately, Addiscombe failed to turn this dominance into wickets, and at drinks the opposition were 52-2.

After the break, things started to get away from Addiscombe, with the CCOW no.3 and 4 playing some powerful cuts, using the sloping ground to their advantage. Mathan and Neil Patel managed to peg them back, taking a wicket each, with Neil aslo taking a smart catch down to his right at square leg, giving Ollie his second wicket. The spinners, Adam and Mohammed, came on and made the most of a pitch that wasn't giving them much assistance. Mohammed missed a tricky caught and bowled opportunity, before channelling his disappointment into a brilliant next ball that took out the batsman's middle stump. A few catches went down and CCOW number 6 and 7 started to play their shots, with the opposition pulling away to 180-5 at tea.

Despite facing an intimating total, Addiscombe's top order enjoyed a good tea (including some excellent chicken wings), before setting about their work. Unforunately, both Nazim and Toby fell cheaply and in quick succession - Nazim caught at mid on off a top edge before Toby couldn't get his gloves out of the way of a rising ball and was caught behind. Mohammed Rafiq went in and was ably supported by Pete, and then Farooq, and the scoreboard ticked over. Sayeed came in at number 6, and immediately went about slaying the bowling - hitting 9 fours and 3 sixes - and caused a bit of disarray in the opposition, including a 10 min stop after the ball was lost over a nearby fence. After Mohammed R fell on 32, the lower order came in and did their best to support Sayeed, notably Neil Patel who blocked out one end whilst Sayeed continued his work. Sayeed was eventually caught on 68 of 55 balls. At this point the run chase was very much on, with 51 required off 8 overs. Adam came in and worked well with Neil, pushing the required run rate to under a run a ball. Unfortunately, Addiscombe couldn't stop the wickets falling, losing by 12 runs with 16 balls remaining.
