2. Tribute to Mike Every

Mike (pictured on the right) was a member of Addiscombe CC in the 60’ s and 70’s who died earlier this month. He was a lower order cavalier striker of the ball and a very sound and excitable wicket-keeper! Mike stood up to the “fastish” bowlers and made many a fine stumping off them. Mike kept in the TK {Terry Kent} and Mike {Charlie} Burrows spin king era when Addiscombe’s 1st XI enjoyed their halcyon days. This included winning the Evening Standard League and getting to the semi-final of the National Club cup, then the DH Robins Cup {now the Royal London Cup}.

Mike was very well liked, always ready with a jocular one liner that was a mainstay of the bon homie which existed. He played in the famous game when a genuine England XI visited Sandilands including Ted Dexter. Ted said to Mike in the last over before lunch when he was on 76, I will go down the wicket next ball, miss it, and you have got to stump me. Mike obliged in style.

Mike also had a few years as our Social Secretary including organising the Dinner Dance’s that were held in the marquee that was erected alongside the pavilion. Mike was married way back to Steve and they used to travel to games on his AJS {bike} and were parents of Ian and Jo.
