8. Craig Stevens - Chairman of Selectors

Name: Craig Stevens

Nickname:
Early on in my time at Addiscombe, I was taking some medication that, shall we say, gave me a dodgy stomach. It meant that if I had to go, I HAD TO GO. As I am a wicket-keeper this was potentially quite tricky, so before the match, I told my captain, Grant Braganza (former 2s skipper) about the situation so he would understand if I had to leave the pitch quickly. I took him aside, we had a discreet chat and he was very sensitive and understanding.

First over of the innings, I did a good diving stop which prevented byes.

And Grant claps his hands, and shouts out for the whole ground to hear ‘Great take, Sh**ty pants!’

Club Role:
Chairman of selectors. Once the season starts, I'll chair the meetings with the skippers each Tuesday after training to select the teams for the coming weekend.

How would you describe yourself as a player?
I am an opening batsmen and wicket-keeper. I am competitive but fair, I don't like cheats. I am a 'walker', if I nick it, I don’t leave the decision to the umpire. I am a bit 'old school' - I think cricket should be a game of honour and integrity.

Old School also extends to my batting style - which means slow scoring! Some seasons, I haven’t even come close to hitting a six...

How long have you played at Addiscombe?
2008 was my first year at the club, which means 2020 will be my 13th season playing for the 'A's.

What is your best cricketing memory?
Playing at Lord's as part of Addiscombe's 150th year celebrations. I even hit a six that day! The day was made even better when Adam (my son) also got to play after a late drop out.

Over the years, I've been lucky to have played a lot of cricket with my Dad and brother and son. I look back fondly of the years being able to play with my family.

What is your most embarrassing moment on a cricket pitch?
A couple of years ago when I was 47, I chased a ball heading to the boundary. I thought I could beat Esmat (aged 18 at the time) who was fielding next to me. I gave it all I had...and then 'twang' - my hamstring went.

If you could be any player, past or present, who would it be?
David Gower. When in top form not one was more graceful or made batting look so easy. (the younger generation can see some classic Gower here)

Favourite format to watch:
Got to be Ashes Tests! You can't beat that old rivalry.

Predictions for Addiscombe's 2020 season:

It's going to be hard but I expect to maintain our league standings across the elevens. If the potential new players that have been at winter nets end up playing this season we could certainly be challenging for promotion across the teams.

Why is Addiscombe CC a great club to join?
ACC has great diversity across our membership and cracking facilities (especially the bar). We are not elitist, we provide cricket for the people!
